Sustainable Packaging Initiatives

Strategic research & development

Strategic research is undertaken to address or benchmark the social, business and technical challenges associated with packaging sustainability and environmental impact. Research investors and partners include commercial organisations, government agencies and a range of Universities. The SPA research portfolio encompasses generic research that is widely disseminated through to commercial-in-confidence projects meeting specific organisational needs.

Individuals and organisations impacted by or interested in reducing the environmental impact of packaging are diverse. Diversity exists in the skill base, concerns, approaches to the issues, and the knowledge and tools required to create solutions. The Packaging sustainability toolkit will include a range of knowledge resources and tools to facilitate ease of solutions by different groups and job functions involved in addressing packaging sustainability. SPA also tailors and designs knowledge resources and tools for specific organisations.

Knowledge exchange & technology diffusion

Sustainable development requires new practice, business processes, new ways of thinking reliant on behaviour and practice change coupled with the development and application of new science and technology. SPA actively engages a broad range of interest groups in the identification of research needs, the development and ownership of research solutions and facilitates the uptake of its research outcomes through involvement and demonstration. SPA coordinates a range of initiatives to integrate knowledge exchange and capability building with identification and delivery of solutions and research outcomes. Through its international linkages SPA acts as a conduit for Australia to participate in and apply international research relevant to packaging sustainability.
