Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an internationally recognised and standardised technique for assessing the environmental aspects and potential impacts associated with a product, process or service. SPA partners have extensive experience in the undertaking of LCA studies. Over the past 10 years a range of LCA studies covering packaging applications as well as other sectors such as furniture, water services, building products and housing have been carried out. Specific packaging related studies include meat trays, yoghurt tubs, biodegradable materials, and post consumer packaging waste management systems. The RMIT and VU SPA partners are pro-actively pursuing both the adoption of the LCA approach in Australian packaging supply chains as well the advancement of the LCA methodology development and standardisation nationally and internationally. This includes active involvement in the Australian LCA Society, organisation of national LCA conferences, active involvement in international networks such as the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and the Packaging and Environment Working Group of the International Association of Packaging research Institutes (IAPRI).
